This film was made as Chris Gollon battled against the clock to finish before Easter his 8-year commission for Fourteen Stations of the Cross for St John on Bethnal Green, a grade-one listed church in east London designed by Sir John Soane, next to the Museum of Childhood. It includes interviews with Chris Gollon and Fr Alan Green.
Chris Gollon takes us through the steps to make a ‘Monotype’- a little known one-off print technique. It was a genre he both mastered and innovated considerably. Some of the monotype techniques he discovered in ink he re-imported into his painting techniques in acrylic, as seen in the films of his painting ‘The Party’ and also a still life.
In 2008, the award-winning River & Rowing Museum commissioned Chris Gollon to paint the Henley Royal Regatta for its permanent art collection, to hang alongside Raoul Dufy’s painting of the same spectacle. In 2010, Chris Gollon returned to work with printmakers Ian & Jan Wilkinson at the Goldmark Atelier, where in just 3 days he produced 30 monotypes of astounding originality both in technique and imagery.
